Operation Backpack / Shoebox This community has been so wonderfully responsive to our requests for school supplies for students over the last several years. Coos Bay School District is asking if you will help again with Operation Backpack / Shoebox. This program was established several years ago to provide backpacks, school supplies, and hygiene products for school children, which helps reduce educational barriers. Individuals, families, and organizations in our community are asked to donate backpacks and school supplies (lists posted in many local stores or go to www.cbd9.net for a list). Also, many of our children need hygiene products, like toothpaste, toothbrush, deodorant, bar soap, shampoo, cream rinse, nail clippers, brush, and comb (please choose products with children’s safety in mind). Other needs include sweatpants and underwear for our younger students who may have accidents during school hours. Donated backpacks and school supplies will be distributed to the schools where they are most needed. Our school nurses distribute the hygiene products throughout the school year as needs arise so there is an increased need for these items. If you want us to do the shopping for you, you may write a check to Coos Bay School District (write “Operation Backpack” on the memo line) as a donation to this program. Donations are tax deductible. Keep your receipts, and give us your name and address so we can send you a letter for your tax records. Economic conditions affect the children of our community. With your support and contributions, we can help provide them with a backpack to carry books and supplies to school or hygiene products for their daily care. Keeping a good feeling about oneself is vital to the learning and growth of our children. Donated items can be delivered to the district office at 1255 Hemlock Avenue in Coos Bay during normal business hours (7:30 AM – 4:30 PM during summer). Feel free to call the district office (267-3104) if you have questions. Please join our Operation Backpack / Shoebox project today.
