The Marshfield Times student news magazine won a first-place award with American Scholastic Press Association for 7 issues of their 2021-2022 news magazine. This is a national award, broken up into several different categories. For the yearbook category, the Mahiscan also won a second-place award for the 2021-2022 school year. Each publication competed with other schools in the same enrollment bracket, between 500-1,000 students. Only one other Oregon magazine, Escribe Maria of St. Mary's Academy in Portland, won a first-place award in the same category.
According to ASPA, the Marshfield Times is an excellent publication. They recognize that the creation of such a magazine teaches students the fundamentals of publishing and creative writing, proofreading/editing skills, and the concepts of design while promoting and supporting a community of young writers, thereby nurturing esteem and status. The Marshfield Times shows the superior efforts of talented and creative editors, writers, artists, photographers, layout/graphics designers, staff members, contributors and adviser. The ability to keep a publication alive and printing during the pandemic is a testament to Marshfield's dedication and devotion to the publication, school, community, and to each other.
The Marshfield Times meets as a class each day, but also participates in school events to become an involved part of the high school. Currently, there are approximately 30 members of the journalism staff, who fundraise, plan, design, and write stories for a 16-page news magazine seven times per school year.
