A MESSAGE FROM OUR SUPERINTENDENT

As we close the 2025–2026 school year, I want to take a moment to celebrate the many accomplishments of our students, staff, and families across Coos Bay Public Schools. This year has been filled with growth, achievement, and meaningful progress toward our vision of ensuring every student is known by name, strength, and need.

Together, we have accomplished a great deal.

Our students demonstrated significant academic growth throughout the year. Across the district, reading proficiency increased by 6%, with 60% of students now meeting benchmark expectations. Mathematics growth was even more impressive, with proficiency increasing by 21% districtwide. Our youngest learners led the way, as Kindergarten reading scores grew by 26% over the course of the year.

At the elementary level, schools achieved remarkable gains in both literacy and mathematics. Eastside and Madison Elementary students demonstrated exceptional growth, with math proficiency increasing by more than 50% at both schools. Millicoma and Sunset also posted strong gains, reflecting the hard work of students and staff throughout the year.

At Marshfield Junior High School, mathematics proficiency increased by 24%, while Marshfield High School students continued to excel academically and prepare for their futures. This year, MHS students earned an impressive 2,430 college credits, completed 424 Advanced Placement exams, and scored above both state and national averages on the SAT. At Milner Crest Education Center, we are proud to celebrate an estimated graduation rate of 95%.

Our commitment to preparing students for life after graduation remains at the heart of the Coos Bay Promise. As we celebrate the Class of 2026, we remain focused on ensuring every graduate leaves our system Enrolled, Enlisted, or Employed and prepared for the opportunities that lie ahead.

We also continued to make progress in creating safe, supportive learning environments. Recent school climate survey results showed that 87.5% of students report feeling safe at school, while 94.4% feel respected by staff. These results reflect the positive relationships that exist throughout our schools and the dedication of our educators.

Financial stewardship remained a priority throughout the year. Through careful planning and strategic budget decisions, we successfully navigated a challenging state funding environment while maintaining our commitment to students and preserving the programs that make Coos Bay Public Schools unique. These efforts have positioned us well as we prepare for the 2026–2027 school year.

While there is much to celebrate, our work is not finished. As we look ahead, we remain committed to strengthening the systems that support student success. Improving attendance, enhancing student behavior supports, and accelerating academic achievement will continue to be key priorities. We know that when students attend regularly, engage positively in school, and receive high-quality instruction, they are better positioned to reach their full potential.

None of this year's accomplishments would have been possible without the partnership of our families, staff, students, and community. Thank you for your continued support, trust, and belief in our schools. Together, we are building a stronger future for every child in Coos Bay.

I wish all of our students, families, and staff a safe, restful, and enjoyable summer. We look forward to welcoming everyone back in the fall and continuing the important work of helping every student thrive.

With gratitude,

Gary Roberts
